Suđurađ

Suđurađ is a small place on the south-eastern side of the island of Šipan, one of only two settlements on the island, the other being Šipanska Luka. Šipan is the biggest and farthest island in the Elaphiti Island archipelago, a group of islands off the coast of Dubrovnik. Šipan is known for its pristine bays and beaches and numerous species of fish that inhabit the sea around the island. According to the last census (2011), Suđurađ has only 207 permanent inhabitants while Šipanska Luka, the other settlement on the island, has 212 permanent inhabitants, making Šipan the most populous of all Elaphiti Islands. As with all Croatian islands, its population increases during summer months due to the influx of tourists. Even though it is the biggest and most populous island in the Elaphiti archipelago, Šipan is not the most popular; Koločep and Lopud seem to attract more tourists, mostly because they are closer to Dubrovnik. Suđurađ is home to a ferry port that connects the island of Šipan with the mainland. The locals used to mostly live off fisheries, cattle and agriculture (figs, grapes, olives) but in recent years, as they have been increasingly turning to tourism, many restaurants, pizzerias, hotel and private accommodation have opened in the settlement. Suđurađ is also known for the wreck of a Roman ship that can be found on the sea bottom in its vicinity, and its rich cultural heritage. The most prominent historical buildings in Suđurađ are the Vice Stjepović Skočibuha’s Mansion (originally built in 1563) and numerous churches. In 1997, during the construction works under the new pier in the ferry port, an ancient ship with several amphoras was discovered.
