Sumartin

Sumartin is a small picturesque place on the eastern side of Brač island with a population of around 500 inhabitants. It is the youngest settlement on Brač. It was founded by refugees from Bosnia and Dalmatia in mid 17th century. For this reason, unlike on the rest of the island, Shtokavian dialect of the Croatian language is spoken in Sumartin. Sumartin got its name from the Saint Martin’s church around which it was built. After arriving to the island, the first Sumartin inhabitants engaged in fisheries, seafaring and shipbuilding. The oldest shipyard in the Adriatic is in Sumartin. Along with the mentioned activities, the inhabitants are mostly engaged in tourism. As a tourist place, Sumartin is connected to the mainland (Makarska) with a ferry line. Sumartin boasts many pebble and sand beaches and inlets, crystal clear sea, pristine nature, shade of pine trees and peaceful surroundings. The sea in Sumartin is so clear it is possible to go swimming in the very centre of town, in the port. Sumartin also boasts a rich culinary offer of products grown/caught around the town (lamb, cheese, olive oil, wine, honey, fish). Accommodation can be found in numerous apartments, villas, hotels etc. The hospitable hosts will make sure you want for nothing. As a quiet destination, Sumartin is ideal for everyone seeking a peaceful holiday away from big crowds. For those who wish to experience some fun and entrainment, there is the nearby Bol, known for its nightlife, discotheques and concerts. Apart from Bol, there is a possibility of taking trips to other places on Brač, the nearby cities of Split, Trogir, Makarska and Omiš and the nearby islands of Hvar, Šolta, Čiovo, Korčula, Vis…
