Dugi Rat is a municipality situated on the Adriatic coast, at the foot of Mosor mountain, just 15 km southeast of Split, the second largest city in Croatia. Dugi Rat consists of three settlements: Duće, Dugi Rat and Krilo Jesenice. As witnessed by the archaeological findings in the nearby caves, this area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The first settlements were situated higher along the Mosor mountain, but as the locals turned from agriculture to fisheries, and more recently tourism, they began to descend towards the coast. Nowadays, Dugi Rat is famous for its naval tradition and tourism. Krilo Jesenice is a settlement with one of the largest fleets of tourist ships in the country; the whole fleet counts about 140 ships with 40-50 new ships built only in the last ten years. Another specificity of Krilo Jesenice is the fact that these ships, due to the settlement’s tradition in shipbuilding, have been built and equipped in the local shipyard. The ships are luxurious and are used to take tourists all over the Adriatic. Dugi Rat is also known as a tourist destination. It is famous for its pebble and sand beaches, Mediterranean climate and vegetation, sunny weather, beautiful old stone house architecture, deep blue sea, Dalmatian dishes prepared from ecologically grown ingredients and Soparnik, an authentic savory pie with Swiss chard filling. As a popular tourist destination, Dugi Rat boasts various types of accommodation: hotels, villas, apartments, private houses etc.
