Makarska is a coastal city located in the middle part of beautiful Croatian coast in the district of Split. Together with it's surrounding, Makarska counts a bit less than 14 000 inhabitants. It is situated in the foothill of the Biokovo mountain and has pleasing weather conditions based on the Mediterranean climate. Because of the influence of the sea, and refreshing wind called maestral, summers in Makarska are very comfortable. The town got it's name after the village located in it's vicinity, Makro. The name of Makarska was mentioned in an document from 16th century during the time of turkish wars for the very first time. Makarska offers a variety of private and hotel type of accomodation, and tourism, of couse, all together with the catering industry presents the main working activity of local inhabitants. On the 100 years anniversary of the town's tourism, a monument ,showing a local man with a foreign tourist girl, was built. In the city there is a variety of tourist activities and monuments. Some of the most interesting ones are the Franciscan monastery, a malacological museum in which you can see over 3000 kinds of sea organisms that live in the Adriatic, and other seas, and the church of Saint Marko located on the town's main square. In the center of the city there is a beautifully arranged park filled with flowers, trees and green surfaces. In many restaurants you can provide some tipical dalmatian delicacies, different fish dishes and so on. One thing you should definitely not miss out on trying is the famous cake called ''Makarana'' which is a sweet dish made out of oranges, lemons, almond, Maraschino and nutmeg. The Starčevićev square is the place where, almost every day, many fun events and other manifestation are held. Makarska is an ideal vacationing spot for everyone – it can offer an relaxing vacation for families with children or an active summer time fullfilled with sporty and fun activities.
